2024 Winner: Marilyn Johnson

Ode to St. Urho

In the 1950’s, it’s been said,
A certain Minnesota Finn did dread
To hear the yearly boasts of his Irish friend,
“March 17 is here!
Let’s celebrate with green beer
And pay tribute to Patrick our Saint!”

The Finn began to stew
And finally knew what to do.
I’ll create our own patron saint!

St. Urho was born
A legend not to scorn.
With his pitchfork and booming voice,
The grasshoppers had no choice
But to flee the vineyards of Finland.

A celebration was due
So only March 16 would do
The Finn said, “ Let’s cheer
With purple or green wine or beer!”

As for my family and me,
We are a bit shy
So we’ll settle for grasshopper pie!
